The jailbreak scene looks pretty pumped up in this festive season! Cydia has finally started to cache Cydia SHSH blobs for iOS 5.0.1, which it had not been doing up till now. This will of-course be very helpful once untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 comes out, and we keep getting updates from the guys of chronic dev team, and the likes of pod2g and muscle nerd that an untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.0.1 is just over the horizon and might just come out sooner than you think.
iOS 5.0.1 is of-course the latest firmware update from Apple for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Although redsnow beta 9 was just released a couple of days back which enabled users on iOS 5.0.1 to get an tethered jailbreak, most people prefer to wait before an untethered jailbreak comes out as they don’t want the hassles of hooking up with redsn0w whenever their iPhone runs out of juice.
For those who don’t know what SHSH blobs or Cydia SHSH blobs actually is, it is a sort of a digital signature that is encrypted inside your firmware ipsw, and it communicates with Apple servers to determine whether you are running the latest firmware or not. It also enables apple to get some control if they ever decide to discontinue support for really old versions of iOS and bar them from accessing services such as iTunes store.
Coming back to Cydia SHSH, having a cached backup of the SHSH blobs for iOS 5.0.1 that is running on your iDevice would be really helpful in-case you ever decide to downgrade your iPhone, most probably for getting an un-tethered jailbreak. There are tools available to manually back up your SHSH blobs such as iFaith that dump your blobs on your hard-drive for later use, however cydia makes the whole process a lot easier.
