Sn0wbreeze 2.9 is out and is the latest update to the popular Sn0wbreeze jailbreaking tool, a brainchild of pod2G. That means no more hooking up your iDevice to your computer if it runs out of juice, as is the case with tethered jailbreaks. You can use Sn0wbreeze 2.9 to jailbreak untethered your iPhone 4, iPad or iPod touch running on iOS 5.0.1. This update comes at a time when Sn0wbreeze is ready to celebrate it’s second birthday. This latest version of Sn0wbreeze 2.9 features pod2g’s untethered jailbreak exploit.
iOS 5 turned out to be a tough cookie as far an untethered jailbreak is concerned, as although tethered jailbreaks for iOS 5 were available early on since the release of iOS 5, untethered jailbreak took some time to be available for general public. This was because Apple was relentless to patch up all the securities holes that DEVS were exploiting to patch the kernel of the iOS.
Sn0wbreeze 2.9 is not the first to be updated though, as Redsn0w has also been updated a few days back to jailbreak untethered iOS 5.01 on iPhone 4 iPod touch and iPad. Be advised that Sn0wbreeze 2.9 is a windows only tool, but that doesn’t mean that you cant jailbreak if you use a mac, as pwnagetool is a tool similar to Sn0wbreeze but made specifically for mac.
Sn0wbreeze is also a must have tool for iPhone unlockers as this would let you preserve your baseband in-case you want to upgrade to a newer firmware version without loosing the Unlock, consequently losing the ability to run your iPhone on a carrier of your choice. Also the newer basebands are hard to crack so it’s best to preserve your baseband, and cook up a custom IPSW.
Now this still doesn’t mean that you can jailbreak your spanking new iPhone 4S, or the iPad 2 Running on iOS 5.0.1. This is of course because both these run on the Latest dual core apple A5 processor, and it’s common knowledge now that A5 has not been jailbroken yet, and is proving to be a challenge for jailbreak creators to hack into. But we continuously get updates on the situation and it seems that an untethered jailbreak for iOS 5.01 running on A5 might just be on the horizon.
